The Flu Express shots service scheduled for tomorrow has been moved to CedarBridge Academy, the health ministry has confirmed.

The drive-in pop-up clinic was to have been held at Hamilton Health Centre on Hamilton’s Victoria Street.

But the Bermuda Police Service and the Ministry of Health wanted to avoid a repeat of traffic jams caused by the drive-in clinic on Wednesday at the rubber tree near Warwick Post Office.

A ministry spokeswoman said: “The Ministry of Health is thrilled by the overwhelming response to the Flu Express yesterday and wish to thank everyone who came out for protecting their families and community.

“However, we are aware of the traffic concerns. We have three additional Flu Express planned and are working closely with the Police to identify a suitable location for the potential increase in demand.

“For Saturday 17 October, the Flu Express will be held at CedarBridge Academy. This should allow for better traffic conditions.”

The spokeswoman added: “The ministry wants to ensure we can accommodate everyone wishing a flu vaccine in a safe manner that does not impede the public.

“The ministry will be providing updates on the other Flu Express locations and would like to encourage anyone who wishes a flu shot to please attend.

“It is more important than ever for everyone to protect themselves, their family and community by getting a flu shot.”

A total of 660 people were given the seasonal vaccine to protect against the flu on Wednesday – but queues of cars stretched as far east as Ord Road, and as far west as the old TN Tatem Middle School.

The turnout was a 33 per cent increase on the numbers seen in previous years.

The service, scheduled to run on Wednesday from 10am to 2pm, opened a half-hour early and ran until around 3.30pm due to the level of demand.

The clinic moved after lunchtime to Horseshoe Bay in Southampton on the advice of police due to problems with traffic.

The drive-in clinic tomorrow at the school, on CedarBridge Lane in Devonshire, will operate from 10am until 2pm.

The ministry said anyone who attended the clinic should wear comfortable clothes to allow the nurse easy access to the injection site in the upper arm.

The flu shot will cost $15 for adults and children on a correct cash-only basis, but is free for anyone aged 65 and older.

More Flu Express drive-in clinics have been scheduled for October 21 at Penno’s Wharf, St George, and October 28 at Somerset Cricket Club field, although those locations may change.
