Men’s health will be in the spotlight next month with two events designed to promote good lifestyles.

Dynamic Urology Services will provide free prostate screenings for men aged 40 and over next month the Axa Man on the Run 5k event to encourage men to exercise will be held on November 8.

But the Covid-19 pandemic has forced changes to the AXA race event this year.

The Government has granted permission for 250 participants and the race will take place at Warwick Academy from 9am.

An additional category this year is a virtual option for men who would prefer not to attend the physical event and also allows them to walk.

Clifford Roberts, the race director, said: “We bring men together to highlight the importance of prevention as a means to reduce the number of men requiring medical treatment or surgery, particularly in respect to prostate cancer.

“We are asking men to commit to running or walking 5k by the end of the day on November 8, either at the official event or at your own pace, on your own time.”

Men will also have the opportunity to discuss the importance of annual health checks, including prostate exams.

All the cash raised will be donated to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.

The charity will use it to support men’s health programmes, including the free annual men’s health screening event, the lunch and learn reduce your risk presentation series and the Centre’s equal access fund, which gives financial support for prostate consultation, ultrasounds, biopsies and radiation therapy.

The free prostate screenings by Dynamic Urology Services were organised to mark “Movember” – the annual men’s cancer awareness month.

The screening involve a blood test and a prostate exam.

It also includes a consultation, in-house prostate specific antigen blood draw and one free follow up to get the results.

A 50 per cent discount on copay for any men's health problems for all ages is also being offered.

This includes prostate or urinary problems, erectile difficulties, vasectomy consultation and any male genital disorders.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer for men worldwide.

Fast detection is key as the survival rate is close to 100 per cent when prostate cancer is caught in its early stages.

Dr Brooks added: “It is our aim to deliver compassionate care to all people in Bermuda regardless of their ability to pay.”
