The Covid-19 vaccination drive has been given a booster shot of $25,000 from a hotel owners’ group.

Stephen Todd, the chief executive of the Bermuda Hotel Association, said that the sooner “herd immunity” could be reached, the sooner the island’s hospitality workers could get back to work.

The donation went to the Bermuda Hospitals Board vaccination clinics at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and Bermuda College in the wake of an appeal from the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Foundation.

The charity asked for cash to help cover expenditure, including paying the nurses, pharmacists and administrative staff who run the clinic.

The BHA said Bermuda’s vaccination record put it among the world’s top ten, but appealed for everyone eligible to get the jab.

Herd immunity is defined as having 70 per cent of the population fully vaccinated.

Tim Morrison, the president of the BHA and general manager at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, said the group was pleased to pitch in for “the incredibly important mission of immunising Bermudians and all eligible residents against Covid-19”.

He added: “Herd immunity is critical not only for the general resumption of normal life, but also key to the success, survival and future growth of the island’s hotel and tourism industry.”
