The number of doctors and nurses who have now received Covid-19 vaccinations has increased significantly, it was announced last night.

At the Government’s weekly Covid press conference, Dr Wesley Miller, Bermuda Hospitals Board’s chief of staff, said the number of nurses who have had at least one shot now stands at 65 per cent.

He said 93 per cent of doctors have had both doses of the vaccine.

Last week The Royal Gazette reported that 26 per cent of the board’s doctors and 50 per cent of its nurses had not received the vaccine.

Dr Miller said last night: “If you recall in a previous press conference, I said I would I would prefer if it was up to 100 per cent and at that time the numbers were sadly below 50 per cent.

“Now 65 per cent of registered nurses have received at least one dose and 93 per cent of doctors are completely vaccinated and whereas we were lagging woefully with the auxiliary staff we are now at 34 per cent there.”

He added: “We are continuing to work with them to encourage more and more to get vaccinated.”

Dr Miller said the vaccination was a voluntary process with no legal way to enforce it and that any legislation would be challenged in terms of human rights.

“Things are improving and we moving in the right direction,” he added.
