Public should get Covid and flu jabs, says Minister

The health minister “strongly” suggested residents get vaccinated against both the flu — after she got her own annual jab — and Covid-19.

Kim Wilson said: “I get the flu vaccine every year as soon as it is available.

“I know this vaccine is safe and effective in preventing most flu cases, and it will protect me, my family, my friends and our community.”

The minister explained: “In some people, the flu infection can be quite serious and may increase their risk of developing complications, such as pneumonia.

“While the coronavirus and the flu symptoms are similar, the flu vaccine and the Covid-19 vaccination are different.

“The flu and Covid-19 vaccines are designed to protect against the specific viruses that cause their respective illnesses.

“As we gear up for flu season, and with the coronavirus still in our community, I strongly suggest people get both for the best protection.”

The flu vaccine is available for priority groups through their doctor or the Flu Express, which is for people aged 12 and over.

Shots cost $15 but are free for seniors — 65 and over.

A consent form where the cost can be paid online can be found at forms.gov.bm/Influenza-Vaccine-Consent.

Residents will then receive an e-mail which must be shown when they arrive for their vaccination.

A spokeswoman added: “If you cannot fill out the consent form online, you can fill it out at the Flu Express location.”

The Flu Express runs from 10am to 2pm at Sandys Secondary Middle School tomorrow; at CedarBridge Academy on October 29; and at Penno’s Wharf on November 2.

Priority groups include healthcare workers, caregivers and essential service workers; people aged 65 and over; and anyone with chronic medical conditions that are at risk of complications from the flu.

Children aged from six months to 11 years should attend their usual doctor’s office for vaccination.

The spokeswoman added: “Flu injections will only be offered at the Flu Express on the specified dates, to individuals in good health without active infections.

“Please dress comfortably to allow the nurse easy access to the injection site in the upper arm.”
