Saving lives: Bermuda Hospitals Board is urging O positive blood donors to come forward (File photograph)

People with O positive blood were asked to donate after an emergency reduced stocks of the blood type.

Donors were asked to make an appointment, although the Bermuda Hospitals Board added that “walk-ins are accepted”.

Eyitayo Fakunle, a consultant haematologist at the BHB, said: “We are in need of O positive blood due to a recent emergency that made our stock lower than we would have anticipated.”

A BHB spokeswoman added: “If you are unsure about your blood type but are willing to donate, please contact the Bermuda Blood Donor Centre at 236-5067 or blood.donor@bhb.bm, by WhatsApp at 533-9553.”

The Bermuda Blood Donor Centre is at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and is open from Monday to Thursday between 8.30am and 2.30pm, and on Friday from 8.30am to 1pm.

It is closed on weekends and public holidays, including this Friday, November 11.

The spokeswoman added: “The Bermuda Blood Donor Centre team thanks the community for their kind assistance in ensuring they can continue to save lives.”
