More than $200,000 was raised for a project that will transform a former church rectory into a residential treatment centre.

Habitat for Humanity of Bermuda held Vegas in the Vaults as part of its efforts to help deliver accommodation for people with long-term mental health conditions.

The charity aims to raise about $600,000 towards the revitalisation of the former St James Church rectory in Sandys.

Its fundraiser last month was on Agar’s Island, off Point Shares, Pembroke.

Sheelagh Cooper, chairwoman of Habitat Bermuda, said: “We are hugely indebted to Lillian Martin who not only provided the amazing vaults for the event but donated an additional $75,000 to the campaign.

“Lillian has been a long-time supporter of Habitat along with countless other charitable organisations in Bermuda.”

A spokeswoman said that almost 130 people were at the event, which included a cocktail reception, auctions and raffles.

She added: “Delicious food from around the world was served up by Island Restaurant Group paired with wines provided by Burrows Lightbourn.

“With ticket sales, donations and fundraising on the evening, the event netted over $200,000 for the project.”

Habitat for Humanity is working in partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute and the Anglican Church of Bermuda to provide somewhere that will offer around-the-clock care for patients with long-term mental conditions.

The charity’s spokeswoman said: “Habitat for Humanity would like to thank Talcott Re for being the event’s key sponsor.

“Their contribution to the event went a long way in helping the charity achieve this incredible amount of money in one evening.

“Thanks also to Bacardi and Burrows Lightbourn for supplying some of the liquor and wine for the event.

“Other contributors were Waterfront Group and ProServe.

“Of course, an event like this would not be possible without our attendees, who really enjoyed the event and contributed greatly to the fundraising efforts that evening.

“It took a great team of volunteers and committee members to bring this amazing event to life.”
