PLP Women’s Caucus to host breast cancer talk
Experts will talk at a breakfast event as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Progressive Labour Party’s Women’s Caucus forum will feature Carika Weldon, the founder of CariGenetics, and Azuree Williams, the education and marketing manager at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.
It will be moderated by Elaine Butterfield.
A PLP spokeswoman said: “Attendees will be treated to discussions to include Get in the Ring, a Caribbean breast cancer whole genome pilot study being conducted in Bermuda.
“This ground-breaking study will establish if some Caribbean women may be more predisposed to breast cancer and will aim to identify markers in DNA that may trigger the onset of the disease.”
She said Ms Williams will speak to the Know Your Lemons campaign, which was adopted to improve early detection for breast cancer worldwide “through creative and empowering education”.
The spokeswoman added: “This presentation uses lemons as the metaphor to empower women with techniques and habits to greatly improve our chances of early detection, and therefore greatly increase our chance of survival.
“We encourage women from all walks of life, young and older, as well as men to come out — men have breast cancer also — and gain valuable information in the fight against breast cancer.”
The event will be held in the West Pembroke Primary School auditorium, on North Shore Road, on October 28 from 9am to 11am. A light breakfast will be served.
A $20 donation was requested from attendees.
Tickets can be bought in advance at 27th Century Boutique on Reid Street, the PLP headquarters — the Reginald A Burrows Building on Court Street, or from members of the PLP Women’s Caucus.
Payments can also be made at the door of the event.
The PLP spokeswoman added: “Part of the proceeds will go towards Bermuda Cancer and Health Education Programme.”
