People can learn more about prostate health during a presentation at City Hall next month.

The event, the first one planned for Men’s Health Month, will take place on November 1 and will feature a welcome from Charles Gosling, the Mayor of Hamilton, and a proclamation by Ed Christopher, the town crier.

Representatives from the Daily Male screening clinics and a urologist will discuss prostate cancer, and survivors of the disease will share their experiences at the event, which will begin at noon.

Dwayne Caines, the City chief executive, said: “The alarming rise in daily diagnoses of prostate cancer, coupled with the avoidable fatalities due to a lack of early detection, underscores the urgent need for this initiative.

Prostate cancer in Bermuda

Prostate cancer was the most prevalent form of cancer among men on the island in 2019, and second overall behind breast cancer.

According to urologist Jonathan Makanjuola, Bermudian men are more likely to die from the disease compared with the world average and Black men are twice as likely to get it as other men.

“This initiative aims not only to inform but transform the quality of life for men in Bermuda.”
