Thirty-seven organisations receive Sun Smart accreditation
More than three dozen summer camps and school programmes received certification from a local charity.
According to a spokeswoman for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, 37 out of the 40 organisations who registered for Sun Smart training this year earned the accreditation from the charity.
BCHC’s Sun Smart programme, established in 2001, teaches safe practices while out in the sun.
The charity has offered Sun Smart training and accreditation to organisations since 2010.
The spokeswoman said: “In the ten seasons of being responsible for the Sun Smart programme, this is the second-highest number of registered organisations, and the second-highest number consecutively to receive full accreditation.”
Training emphasised the importance of wearing sunglasses, protective clothing, mineral-based sunscreen — SPF 30 — and broadbrimmed hats, as well as staying hydrated and seeking shade between 10am and 4pm.
The spokeswoman added: “This allows the community at large to reduce their skin cancer risk by being mindful of these behaviours and exercising them while enjoying the outdoors.”
Organisations earning the accreditation this year include several after-school programmes, Camp Xplosion, Heritage summer camp and Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club sailing programmes.
The accreditation is valid through summer 2024, but must be renewed by June 2025 to maintain Sun Smart status.
