Influenza vaccines are now available courtesy of the health department’s Flu Express.

However, the Covid-19 shot is still being sought with Britain’s help and supplies are not expected until next month.

The seasonal flu vaccine is available to the public via their physicians or the Express, for those 12 and above.

The jab is $20, paid in cash or online, and free for those 65 and above.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, said she made a point of getting the flu shot every year “as soon as it becomes available”.

“I have full confidence in the safety and effectiveness of this vaccine in preventing the majority of flu cases,” she said.

“By doing so, I protect myself and safeguard my family, friends, and our entire community."

Flu shots now come with a consent form, which can also be completed online to reduce wait times.

Drive-through vaccination is available from 10am to 2pm at the old airport terminal on Wednesday and Saturday next week.

Another drive-through is on offer at the same times next Tuesday at the Somerset Community Centre on Boaz Island.

Walk-ins will be accepted next Wednesday at the Hamilton Health Centre on Victoria Street from 2pm to 6pm.

Priority will be given to:

• Healthcare workers, caregivers and essential service workers;

• Those 65 and above;

• Anyone with chronic medical conditions putting them at risk of complications from influenza, such as diabetics, asthmatics and people with heart disease, who should inform their doctor when they have been vaccinated.

Children under 12 should attend their usual doctor’s office for vaccination.

The Flu Express will be given to people in good health without active infections.

The public are advised to dress comfortably to allow easy access to the injection site in the upper arm.

Ms Wilson said the ministry was working with the UK Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office to acquire Covid-19 booster doses.

She added: "Influenza and Covid-19 can lead to a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, and can result in hospital admission and even death, particularly among high-risk groups like the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

“If you have any questions about the flu shot and the Covid-19 booster, or need more information, please consult a healthcare professional or call the Department of Health on 278-6452.”
