Dentist and students offer free exams at Summerhaven
A dentist and her students provided free check-ups and advice to residents at a rest home yesterday.
Amber White, from Mitis Dental Services, and aspiring dentists Zydeja Burgess and Ashunti Crockwell gave this to residents of Summerhaven in Smith’s.
The women did this to give back to the community and to ensure that the residents had access to dental care.
Ms Burgess said they “checked for gum disease and anything serious, and let them know if they needed X-rays or further treatment such as dentures.
“We came to visit last week, and they were really excited about us doing this.”
Dr White said: “We had some availability in our schedule, so we thought to come to Summerhaven because it has a smaller population.
“Lefroy House is somewhere that we would need a day or two. They have so many people there.”
The group will offer these services at other homes, as well as public schools, in the new year.
Ms Burgess said: “We have been in contact with Elliott Primary and Francis Patton.
“This effort is more than just a service. it’s a story of gratitude, community and hope.
“We believe that by sharing our experiences, we can inspire others to engage in similar acts of kindness and service.”
