Health ministry: practise good hygiene this holiday season
The health ministry urged the public to be protect themselves and their loved ones from respiratory infections this holiday weekend.
The ministry’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit said that influenza and Covid-19 were at risk of being transmitted during the holidays as people travel and meet with friends and family.
It recommended people take a Covid-19 test before going to large events and being mindful of who may be at a higher risk, such as the elderly or those who are immunocompromised.
The ESU also recommended hosting smaller gatherings to reduce the risk of spreading illness, particularly if they are outdoors, while also reminding the public that virtual celebrations can offer “a joyful and safe alternative”.
Good hygiene, including frequent handwashing, should be practised or maintained.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue during a cough or sneeze and dispose of the used tissue.
If a tissue is not available, coughs and sneezes should be directed into the inner elbow and not the hands.
If travelling, wear a mask in crowded or enclosed spaces, such as public transport, and practise social distancing.
Travellers should also pack necessary personal protective equipment, such as masks, hand sanitiser, disinfectant wipes and tissues.
Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said that following these instructions would help everyone have “a safe and enjoyable holiday season for everyone”.
She added: “Let's prioritise the wellbeing of our community members and make responsible choices during this special time.
“The Ministry of Health wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season.”
