Reinsurance staff roll up sleeves for renovation project
An “energetic” team from a reinsurance company lent helping hands to a project that will turn a former church rectory in Sandys into a residential treatment centre.
Employees of Talcott Re were involved in sanding and refinishing wooden doors, window frames and railings at the listed building.
The old St James’s Church rectory — Bridge House — is to be repurposed as a facility for community-based housing, programmes and support for people with mental-health challenges.
Habitat for Humanity of Bermuda developed the project in partnership with the Anglican Church of Bermuda and the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute.
Sheelagh Cooper, the charity’s chairwoman, said the rectory “was the scene of some amazing work by a very energetic crew of Talcott Re staff” last month.
She added: “The rectory is located on Middle Road in Somerset and is expected to be completed and ready to receive patients by the end of February.
“The centre will accommodate patients housed in the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute, in an effort to improve the standard of care for those challenged with mental illness.
“Talcott continues to be a great support to Habitat, having donated $30,000 in 2023 and now providing volunteer help.
“Habitat has a robust volunteer programme, providing opportunities for corporates to plan a day of giving, joining forces with Habitat at one of our projects.”
