Additional opportunities for residents to receive the Covid-19 vaccine are expected to be created after an “overwhelming” response filled up appointment slots, the Government said.

The ministry received 5,760 adult doses of the shot and 2,880 paediatric doses.

It was announced last week that Covid-19 and influenza vaccinations would be made available at the Hamilton Health Centre by appointment only.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said today: “I am quite pleased with the success of the recent Covid-19 and influenza vaccination campaign.

“The demand was overwhelming, and I extend my gratitude to the dedicated team at the Hamilton health clinic for their tireless efforts in ensuring that everyone who wanted the vaccine had the opportunity to receive it.

“All available appointments were booked, but efforts are ongoing to ensure everyone can access the Covid-19 vaccine.”

Although the initial appointment schedule is fully booked, the Government said that its Department of Health aims to create additional appointment slots.

A press statement added that the health ministry is offering Covid-19 vaccine doses to general practitioners at no charge for any that show interest.

Shaun Ramroop, the Acting Chief Medical Officer, praised the organisation and efficiency of the Hamilton Health Clinic, where the jabs were available on Saturday.

He said: “The clinic vaccinated over 200 individuals by 1pm, exceeding the number of scheduled appointments.

“I must commend the team for their outstanding performance.”

The Covid-19 vaccine is available free of charge and will be prioritised for residents with an increased risk of illness, which includes people aged 65 or older and those with chronic health conditions.

Healthcare and other essential service workers also get priority.

The influenza vaccine has also been recommended to people aged 12 and older. Consultations with paediatricians should be made for anyone younger.

The flu jab is free for people aged 65 and older, and may incur a fee of $20 for those aged 12 to 64.
