Charity to host talk on lung cancer in Bermuda
Residents were invited to hear about the causes and preventive measures which can be used to treat lung cancer at a free presentation tomorrow at the City Hall Arts Centre.
The Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will host the event from 5.30pm to 7pm.
Jacob Sands, an associate oncology medical director at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Gagan Bhatnagar, a clinical oncologist at the BCHC, will deliver presentations at the event, which is part of the charity’s Cancer Talk series.
The BCHC said that an average of 24 cases of lung cancer were recorded on the island annually.
It added that the disease remained the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Bermuda, with 22 deaths recorded annually.
The BCHC said lung cancer was the fourth most common cancer that affected residents, trailing breast, prostate and colon cancers.
Half of the island’s lung cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage — stages III and IV, the organisation said.
The charity added that the situation underscored “the critical need for early detection and awareness”.
It said: “Early detection and smoking cessation are crucial in reducing lung cancer's impact on public health.
“We encourage everyone to attend this important event to learn more about lung cancer and how we can work together to combat it.”
While admission to the event is free, owing to limited seating, the charity urged attendees to RSVP at www.chc.bm to secure seats.
