Coach who needed $100,000 is to get surgery on island
A beloved father and coach will receive life-saving medical treatment in Bermuda next week.
Darren Whitehead, 59, was originally set to go overseas to have a new defibrillator placed in his heart, as the one he received nine years ago could expire in less than 30 days.
His daughter, Trinity Basden, created a GoFundMe initiative with a $100,000 goal so that her father could receive this treatment.
More than 360 people, including an eight-year-old boy, donated $71,093 towards the fundraiser, which opened on June 15, with online donations closing this week.
A member of Mr Whitehead’s family said online donations were closed because, thanks to surgeons and a private donor, the procedure will now be done on the island.
Mr Whitehead has been at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for about three weeks and was overwhelmed by the amount of support shown.
He told The Royal Gazette last week: “I try to make a difference in people’s lives, regardless of colour, creed or nationality, and [it is great] to see it reciprocated.
“Love is all there is and conquers all and I am feeling love from all the way on the other side of the world right now.”
FC Bascome, where Mr Whitehead coaches football, raised money for him through a bake sale last week and a potluck dinner at the Bermuda Athletic Association last night.
The bake sale, which raised $5,600, opened on BAA field 8.30am on June 22, and all items were sold by about 3pm. Organisers hoped to sell about 200 $25 tickets for the potluck.
Mr Whitehead’s family thanked the community for their generosity and kindness.
