Public have their say on pesticide use

Safety first: although pesticides are beneficial, they can also prove harmful (File photograph)

The Government has received “invaluable” feedback from the public to help shape future regulations on the use of pesticides.

A questionnaire was available to residents throughout last month, and responses have now been collated and made available to the public.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said: "The feedback from this public consultation is essential in guiding our priorities and shaping the final regulations.

“We greatly appreciate everyone who participated by completing the questionnaire and sharing their thoughts. The results have directed our focus towards licensing commercial pesticide applicators, as well as training and importation.

"The insights and perspectives we've received are invaluable in helping us develop pesticides regulations that protect our environment and the health of our community, while also ensuring these crucial tools remain accessible to those who rely on them."

The proposed pesticides regulations are intended to increase the safety of pesticides use in Bermuda from a human health and environmental perspective.

A ministry spokeswoman said that although pesticides are beneficial in many ways, their misuse can negatively affect the environment and public health.

The spokeswoman added that Bermuda’s environment is particularly vulnerable to damage from pesticides, particularly because it is one of the most densely populated countries where rainwater is harvested for drinking water.

The consultation process is continuing, and this marks the completion of phases one and two. In the third phase, scheduled for next month, stakeholders will be invited to participate in focus groups.
