Summer camps earn SunSmart accreditation

More than 30 summer camps have won accreditation from a cancer charity this year.

Azuree Williams, who manages the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s SunSmart programme, said organisations such as Dolphin Quest, Raleigh Bermuda and Lil’ Saints summer camp were recertified for the programme and Diame sewing camp and Teacher D’s summer camp were accredited for the first time.

Established in 2001, SunSmart aims to prevent harmful sun exposure by teaching safe outdoor practices.

Organisations must attend a 90-minute workshop, submit a SunSmart strategy and receive a grade of at least 70 per cent by BCHC to get accredited.

Ms Williams explained: “We are looking to ensure that students and staff are wearing hats and sunscreen when out in the sun.

“If they have outings or excursions where there is no shade provided, we make sure they take shade with them, and we are also looking to ensure that no one has sunburn.

“We also make sure that the camp directors have completed a questionnaire on what they do or do not offer on-site as far as running their camp and where they need to improve.”

The accreditation is valid through summer 2025, but must be renewed by June 2026 to maintain SunSmart status.
