Health experts and officials of the Bermuda Public Services Union are to hold a panel discussion to promote a culture of long-term mental wellness in the workplace and in the community.

The virtual event is to take place tomorrow at 8pm as part of the global observance of World Mental Health Day.

In a statement, the BPSU said the discussions will be aired on television on Channel 82 and will also be accessible through the union’s social media platforms.

The event, which is organised by the union’s migrant workers and mental health campaign committees, will be held under the title “Shifting the narrative: demystifying mental health in the workplace and community”.

The union said the initiative highlights the importance of mental health in both professional and personal environments, while working to break the stigma surrounding the topic.

The hour-long event, which will be aired in two 30-minute segments, will feature Bermuda’s union representatives and mental health professionals.

They will explore the essential services available on the island, discuss necessary policy changes, and share strategies for fostering mental wellness in workplaces and communities.

Armell Thomas, the union’s president, said: “Mental health is integral to a healthy and productive workforce.

“Through this discussion, we advocate for both actions and long-term changes that support the wellbeing of our members and the wider Bermuda community.

“The BPSU is proud to collaborate with service providers and mental health experts to bring this crucial issue to the forefront.”

To promote advocacy, the union encouraged its members, employers and the public to tune in to engage in the discussions.

It said: “This discussion underscores the union’s holistic approach to mental health, emphasising that the implications of mental wellness reach far beyond the workplace.”

The union said the event was part of its wider initiative to promote mental health awareness and support throughout Bermuda, ensuring that all workers have access to the necessary resources to thrive.

Meanwhile, the BPSU is to host a Mental Health Awareness Expo on Saturday at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

The free event, which will run from 1pm to 4.30pm, is open to union members and the general public.

Attendees will have an opportunity to connect with various mental health professionals and access resources designed to help people better understand and manage their mental wellbeing.

The union said the event seeks to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health and foster open conversations that contribute to a healthier, more supportive community.

Mr Thomas said the event will be “a crucial opportunity” to offer support and guidance for individuals to not only manage their mental health but to thrive.

The event will feature a diverse range of mental health providers who will share resources, offer guidance, and provide tools to help individuals and families enhance their mental health.

Ms Grant-Simmons said: "We want to create a space where people can feel comfortable discussing their mental health, especially in relation to the workplace.

“We’re excited to bring together mental health experts and services that will help individuals prioritise their mental wellbeing."
