Healthcare businesses invited to Pipa webinars

Two training sessions are being offered by the Bermuda Health Council to help healthcare organisations meet the requirements of privacy legislation.

The Personal Information Protection Act is to be fully implemented on January 1, 2025.

A statement from the health council said that the webinars will be hosted by industry leaders from KPMG and Appleby, and were designed to provide “essential knowledge and practical tools” for businesses to safeguard patient data and meet the Act’s requirements.

It added: “These training sessions will cover critical aspects of data protection and privacy in the healthcare sector, offering attendees practical insights and actionable steps for building and maintaining a Pipa-compliant privacy programme.”

A health council spokesman said: "Protecting data is not only a legal obligation under Pipa but also a crucial element in maintaining trust within Bermuda's healthcare sector.

“As we approach the January 2025 implementation, these training sessions offer an opportunity for healthcare businesses to ensure they are fully equipped to meet the highest standards of privacy and data protection.

“By empowering our sector with the right knowledge and tools, we are collectively safeguarding the privacy rights of every individual in Bermuda.”

KPMG’s Road to Pipa: Healthcare Deep Dive will run from 9am to 10am on October 24.

The statement explained: “In this session, KPMG’s experts will guide participants through key privacy concepts specific to Bermuda's healthcare industry.

“Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to build a robust Pipa-compliant privacy programme through real-life examples, including how to manage data flows, handle international transfers and secure sensitive personal information.”

On November 1, Appleby will run its Pipa Readiness Training Seminar from 1pm to 2.30pm.

The statement said: “Presented by Duncan Card from Appleby, this webinar will cover the regulatory requirements healthcare organisations must meet under Pipa.

“Attendees will learn best practices for protecting patient data, implementing compliant policies and navigating common data security challenges within the healthcare sector.

“A live Q&A session will follow the presentation.”

It added: “Healthcare businesses are encouraged to register for one or both webinars to gain comprehensive knowledge and resources for Pipa compliance."
