Bermuda marks International Pharmacy Week

The Bermuda Pharmaceutical Association highlighted the work done by members to improve health on the island as part of International Pharmacy Week.

Omar Green, president of the BPA, said: “Pharmacists are integral to our healthcare system. We urge the public to utilise their local pharmacies as a valuable, easily accessible resource for health and wellness.”

This year’s Pharmacy Week, which runs until Saturday, carries the theme of “Meeting global health needs”, with organisers locally focusing on pharmacists as partners in community health.

A BPA spokesman said: “Over the years, pharmacists have evolved into much more than dispensers of medication. They are vital healthcare providers who contribute significantly to both the prevention and management of diseases.

“Their expertise not only improves patient outcomes but also helps reduce the overall costs of healthcare, making them an indispensable part of the healthcare team.

“One of the most important roles of a pharmacist is helping patients understand and manage their medications.

“By providing clear guidance and support, they improve medication adherence, reducing errors and avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions.”

The spokesman added that pharmacists offer patients personalised services, promote cost-effective healthcare options and support public health initiatives.

“Whether it is raising awareness about chronic diseases, supporting vaccination efforts, or educating the public on healthy lifestyles, their outreach efforts have a positive impact on the broader community,” the spokesman said.

“Their contributions are essential to the management of conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which require long-term care and attention.

“By working with other healthcare providers, pharmacists ensure that patient care is well-coordinated and efficient, which improves outcomes across the board.”

The organisation invited the public to join in the celebrations by visiting their local pharmacies for consultation, learning about pharmacy services or posting their support of pharmacists online with the hashtag #BermudaPharmacyWeek.
