Designs sought for new West End care home

Architectural firms have been invited to compete for the chance to replace a seniors care home in Sandys.

The Government has asked firms to come up with designs for the Lefroy Care Community to replace the dilapidated Lefroy House.

The Bermuda National Trust said the building dated back to a hospital built in 1899 and renovated in the 1950s.

Lefroy House was damaged in 2003 during Hurricane Fabian and an inspection highlighted “significant areas of concern” in 2022.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, said: “Our government understands the realities of an ageing population and the challenges facing our long-term care system.

“We are deeply committed to addressing these needs by creating more long-term care beds and establishing additional care homes in our community.

“This initiative ensures that our seniors receive the support and services they deserve and underscores our firm commitment to our elders and the most vulnerable in our society.”

Firms were encouraged to submit a request for information by the start of next month.

The Government is to shortlist three firms to participate in the conceptual design phase of the competition.

The winner will be awarded $70,000 and the opportunity to design the landmark project.

Tinée Furbert, the seniors minister, said: “I am excited about this new project.

“The Government of Bermuda's National Seniors Strategy 2024-30 highlights the crucial need for more long-term care options and affordable housing for seniors.

“This initiative is essential to ensure that our seniors can age with dignity, independence and a high quality of life.”

Lefroy House is a multi-storey care home at Ireland Island South, owned and run by the Ministry of Health on behalf of the Government. It has the capacity to hold 40 residents.

Jache Adams, the public works minister, said: “We are excited to embark on this journey to create a world-class care community that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of our seniors.

“We encourage all eligible architectural firms to participate in this competition and contribute their vision to this important project.”

Requests for information must be sent to Milton Harris at msharris@gov.bm by 3pm on May 2.
