High marks celebrated for island’s cancer treatment centre

A high-precision, non-surgical option for cancer treatment on the island has won accreditation for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.

The charity’s radiation therapy unit has earned a full three-year accreditation from the American College of Radiation Oncology.

The BCHC has offered radiation treatment since 2017.

The centre said that Acro accreditation was granted to only a third of facilities on their first attempt — with the BCHC not only passing on its first submission, but coming through with an outstanding score of 90 per cent, well above the 80 per cent threshold.

It means the centre met or exceeded the highest international standards for the treatment, giving top-tier care on the island at no cost to the patient.

Dave Serratore, its chief physicist and radiation safety officer, called the recognition “a testament to our commitment to excellence”.

He added: “We operate with the same advanced treatment systems, software, protocols and quality assurance programmes used at Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Centre in Boston.

“Patients can trust they are receiving the best possible care without leaving the island.”

Chris Fosker, the chief executive and medical direct of BCHC, said it marked the centre’s second international accreditation earned on first application for radiation oncology.

Additionally, the BCHC’s acquisition of the TrueBeam linear accelerator has drastically cut the need for overseas treatment.

Roughly 80 patients annually were travelling for procedures eight years ago, while only two had to leave the island in 2024.

The centre has also seen a fourfold increase in the number of underinsured patients receiving care.

The BCHC’s integrated cancer care model includes a new cancer navigation service, added last year to deliver a seamless care pathway.
