Swifts take title with victory over Bluebirds

Women’s ‘B’ DivisionSwifts 2 Bluebirds 0Swifts won the 2010/11 B division with their victory over Bluebirds.The newly-crowned champions gained five penalty corners early on, but despite their domination they were unable to score in the first half with their best chance being a powerfully struck shot by Lorina Harvey which hit the post.The deadlock came to an end in the 50th minute when Iman Smith drove into the circle unopposed on a free hit restart and fired her shot past the Bluebirds goalkeeper.Lorina Harvey sealed the win and the championship in the 64th when her penalty corner shot found the back of the net.Longtail/Canaries 2Cardinals 0Longtails/Canaries defeated the Cardinals, thanks to a brace from Jokiah Richardson.Richardson was on the scoresheet in the third minute when she slammed her shot home from close range.In the second half Richardson scored her second field goal in the 58th minute to double the lead.Ravens 3 Swallows 2Ravens put pressure on Swallows early and were awarded their first goal in the 5th minute when Georgia Harris crossed the ball for Lindsay Kelly to score.The lead didn’t last long though as the Swallows’ Jennifer Chisnall pressured the Ravens defence and passed the ball into the ‘D’ where Kayla Kellman slotted home.Ravens went back into the lead in the 14th minute with a field goal strike by Harris into the far corner.In the 50th minute Kelly got her brace to make the score 3-1 to Ravens.Swallows didn’t give up and were within one in the 55th when Heather Sinclair ran the length of the pitch, dribbling past Ravens before passing the ball to Joanna Heaney who slipped the ball into the near post to make it 3-2.Women’s ‘A’ DivisionSwallows 0 Ravens 1The deadlock in this intense match between the league’s top teams was broken in the 58th minute when Ravens were awarded a penalty corner. Kirsten Faria pushed out to Megan Leitch who slipped it left for Megan Troake who hit the ball past the outstretched Swallows ‘keeper.This result leaves the two teams equal on points at the top of the table with the Ravens edging into the lead on goal difference.Swifts 4 Budgies 3Budgies opened the scoring in the second minute when Keishae Robinson was allowed into the Swifts’ circle unopposed and fired a powerful shot into the net.In the 41st minute the Budgies’ Erica Furtado received a pass from Robinson and fired a shot into the goal to double her team’s lead.In the 42nd minute Swifts’ Iman Smith’s quick free hit found Ryanne Bardgett who connected with a first time field goal shot to reduce the deficit.Three minutes later the Swifts goalkeeper Taj Branch saved a powerful shot from Budgies Robinson only for Furtado to slot in the rebound.With 13 minutes remaining the Swifts then mounted a comeback. In the 57th minute the Swifts cut the Budgies lead to one with a goal from Raven Pearman.The Swifts then levelled the score in the 66th minute when Alex Francis passed to Bardgett who reversed stick shot found the back of the net.As both sides strived to find a winner, Francis broke away from the defence seconds before the final whistle to beating the keeper and grab the win.Wildcats 1 Canaries 2Canaries’ Joanne Smith-Barrow scored two field goals in the 7th and 9th minute. Wildcats’ Susanna Almeida scored from a penalty corner in the 13th minute.Men’s DivisionPolecats 5 Chameleons 2The Chameleons took an early lead in this top-of-the-table clash in the 9th minute through Robin Smallman.Polecats fought back to tie the game in the 18th minute with a field goal by Shannon Simons who flicked the ball into the net from a difficult angle.Less than a minute later the Chameleons restored their lead from a penalty converted by Paul Deans.The Polecats drew even in the 31st minute when Byron Rencken slotted in the ball from a penalty corner.They then took the lead for the first time with a field goal in the 45th minute when Simons fired in a shot from the top of the circle.The Polecats doubled their lead in the 58th minute from a penalty corner shot by Richard Marriott, before Andrew Brouwer sealed the win in the 63rd minute after converting from a penalty corner.Rebels 4 Upstarts 3Sloppy passing by Rebels allowed Upstarts to take the lead in the 8th minute through Gary Tavares.Rebels spurned chances from short corners to level the score, until Ross Wilyman put a chance away from close range to draw level.Upstarts took the lead from field goals in the 38th minute by Tavares and in the 45th minute by Bruce Smith.But Martin McHugh pulled one back for Rebels, and with momentum swinging their way Sam Ward swept in the equaliser in the 56th minute.With minutes to go, Scott DeCosta placed a pass straight along the goal line where McHugh was waiting to pounce for his second goal.
