Swifts coach Dafydd Hermann-Smith was a pleased man over the weekend as his young side won the women’s hockey ‘B’ division title with two games to spare. The team, made up of high school players, wrapped up the title with their 2-0 win over Bluebirds, thanks to goals from Iman Smith and Lorina Harvey.Winning the division was a priority this term, said Hermann-Smith, after seeing their potential last season when they won the ‘B’ division KO Cup.“We pretty much set this out as a goal for the season,” he said. “Winning the ‘B’ Cup last year was the springboard, again I had told the players that they were going to win the ‘B’ Cup and they went out and achieved that aim.“This season was similar, I told the players we could win the ‘B’ League and they responded to that extremely well.“We began the season playing very well, beating the defending champions Ravens 2-0 in the first game of the season was a good indicator as to the strength of the team and was also a great confidence booster.“The match last weekend against Bluebirds, who were also unbeaten at the time, was always going to be a real test but the team played to their potential, our goalkeeper only touched the ball once in the entire game and the team played to its strengths, although Bluebirds defence did play well throughout.”The season wasn’t all fun and games, however, with the side having to scrap their way through some rough times, notably before and after the Christmas break. The growing pains enabled the side to show their true ability and determination to get the job done, said the coach. It was, he added, a total team effort put forth by all members of the squads.Having a talented goal scorer in Ryane Bardgett didn’t hurt their cause, while having players as young as 13-years-old on the squad showed the future is bright for both the club and the sport.“Just before and just after Christmas the team lost its way a bit and struggled to remain unbeaten,” said Hermann-Smith. “Then, since the middle of January the team have again begun to play well.“The side have played as a team throughout the season, eight different players have got on the scoresheet including one of our youngest, 13-year- old Azari Thomas, who has a very bright future in this game.“We have used three different goalkeepers, although the regular keeper Cheresa LeMaire has had a very good season.“The defence has been anchored by centre backs Emily Chadderton, Latonia Fray and Megan Lindsay-Bayley, the midfield by Smith, Harvey and Raven Pearman and the forward line by Bardgett, Alex Francis and Lorendae Symonds.“Of course it’s always useful to have a goalscorer who is having a standout season, Ryanne Bardgett has scored 26 goals so far with two matches remaining.“But on Sunday against Bluebirds when she did not get on the scoresheet, Iman Smith and Lorina Harvey stepped up to get the goals.”
