Golden goal curse strikes Cardinals again

Women’s B Knock Outsemi-finalsSwifts B 0 Bluebirds B 1In order to make up the full team of eleven, Bluebirds coach, Helen Trussell, donned the royal blue kit and borrowed shin pads, socks and a headband.And she turned in an impressive performance shutting down the ‘B’ league’s leading goal scorer, Ryanne Bardgett, as the Bluebirds stepped up to the challenge and, despite the obvious age difference Under 18s Swifts against the ‘mature’ Bluebirds they kept up the pace until the final whistle.The only goal in the match was in the 42nd minute from a penalty corner when captain, Kris Soares, pushed the ball to Deborah Sagurs who fired home from the left hand side of the circle.Cardinals B 2 Canaries B 1Cardinals welcomed back Laura Robinson who returned home on a school break, together with two juniors Alyah Williams and Lindsay Matthews.They went in front in the fourth minute through a penalty by Helen Marshall and she doubled their lead converting another penalty stroke in the 12th minute.Canaries’ Gabriela Grabic pulled a goal back for her side in the 42nd minute from a penalty corner.Women’s B Knock Out finalsBluebirds 1 Cardinals 0It took Bluebirds around 15 minutes to get their muscles loosened up from the previous day’s semi-finals, but then the game took on the intensity of a match that both teams desired to win.Both sides had chances to score, with both winning five penalty corners which neither could convert.At the end of 70 minutes the game was deadlocked and went into extra time; hence the dreaded golden goal scenario which Cardinals know all to well having lost the previous three B final tournaments that way.A quickly taken free hit just outside the Cardinals circle by Bluebirds’ forward, Laura Bardgett, found Sarah Smith who fired a shot at the goal in the 76th minute only to be well-saved by goalkeeper Augustus.However, the deflected ball fell back in the path of Smith who saw an opening and slotted it into the back of the net to secure victory for Bluebirds.Women’s A Knock Outsemi-finalsRavens A 0 Budgies A 2Budgies put pressure on Ravens early on gaining two penalty corners. In the 24th minute a penalty corner by Budgies’ Keishae Robinson found Erica Furtado, who fired home a shot at goal.Ravens were unsuccessful in converting their nine penalty corners. In the second half Budgies pushed forward again attacking Ravens’ defence. Budgies’ Stephanie Adderley tipped the ball into the Ravens’ net in the 62nd minute sealing the win for Budgies.Wildcats A 6 Swallows A 0This semi-final match saw Wildcats thrash Swallows. Wildcats’ Eva Dillas scored a field goal early in the fourth minute with the first-half ending 1-0 to Wildcats.The second-half started with more goals through Susanna Almeida, Maria Pichery and Gail Thorne.Wildcats’ Almeida scored her second field goal in the 63rd minute to complete her hat-trick of field goals in the 67th minute.Women’s A Knock-Out finalBudgies 2 Wildcats 1The Budgies were crowned champions of the Women’s A Hockey Division Knock Out final after defeating Wildcats.Budgies took the lead through a penalty corner which saw Keishae Robinson find Erica Furtado who fired home past the Wildcats goalkeeper.Wildcats had their chances, mostly from penalty corners, but were unable to breach Budgies’ unyielding backline. Budgies scored again when they were awarded a free hit just outside the Dee.Robinson was left unmarked and allowed to advance with the ball before scoring with a reverse hit. Wildcats came back in the second half when they managed to convert a penalty corner. Zuri Phillips played a one-two with Susanna Almeida and then slipped the ball beyond the keeper.Men’s KO semi-finalsChameleons 2 Panthers 3In the semi-finals Panthers beat league champions Chameleons in an intense game.Panthers’ Jeremy Shrubb opened the scoring in the 45th minute after a great dribble by Tony Ward.Chameleons were quick to equalise in the 62nd minute via a penalty stroke executed by Paul Deans.Panthers then scored two field goals from Justin Barritt and Mark Ray.Chameleons threatened to come back in the game with a goal from a penalty corner from Paul Deans in the 68th minute.Upstarts 4 Rebels 0The men’s semi-final saw eight man Rebels take on ten man Upstarts.Initially Rebels had a bright start but as the game wore on the extra work required to make up for having two less players began to have an effect.Before the interval Upstarts’ Bruce Smith led his team by two goals in the 31st and 34th minute.In the second-half Smith added another two goals to complete the rout.Men’s Knock Out finalsPanthers 8 Upstarts 1Defending Knock Out Champions Panthers defeated Upstarts 8-1 in the final to win their fourth consecutive Knock Out title.Penalty corner specialist Dave Horan opened the scoring for Panthers with a goal from a penalty corner in the 10th minute. They then added further goals through Justin Barritt in the 15th minute, Jeremy Shrubb a minute later and Phil Philpott in the 22nd minute.Upstarts’ Steve Miles scored from a penalty corner in the 30th minute to pull a goal back.Panthers stepped up their game in the second half; Tony Ward scored field goals in the 43rd and 63rd minute and seconds later Rudy D’Cunha scored in the same fashion.Eleven-year-old junior Justin Ray scored the final goal as a result of a deflection off his stick.
