Bermuda finish eighth at Masters Ball Hockey World Championships
Bermuda finished eight at the Masters World Ball Hockey Championships in the United States on Sunday.
The team suffered an 8-2 loss to Portugal in a seventh-place play-off to finish eighth of the ten teams in the competition.
Tom Worthington-White and Cory Caouette scored the goals for Bermuda with both assists coming from vice-captain Jeremy Estey. Goalkeeper Scott Steele kept the Bermudians in the game against a highly offensive Portuguese side.
Chris Merritt, the Bermuda captain said while they did not meet expectation, they will look to build on the positives as they gear up for future events.
“Bermuda came into the tournament with high expectations to compete at the highest level of ball hockey in the world,’’ Merritt said.
“Although we came up a little bit short, we competed with the best in the world and we will take a lot away from our experience in Buffalo and build on that for future tournaments.
“Bermuda gained a lot of admiration from the best teams in this tournament as highly skilled and competitive players and represented Bermuda on a global scale, I couldn’t be more proud of our group.”
Bermuda started the tournament by losing a shootout to Italy after the match finished 1-1 in regulation time. They recovered from that to thump Haiti 7-1 before losing 3-2 to Slovakia. Another loss followed with a 7-2 defeat by Canada Saskatchewan before losing to the Canada national team 8-2 in the quarter-finals.
