Bermuda targeting first Pan Am Challenge win against Guyana

Bermuda will be hoping to repeat some 2022 heroics when they face Guyana in their third match of the Pan American Challenge at the National Sports Centre on Tuesday.

Two years ago, Kovin Moodley’s side defeated the Guyanese 1-0 on home turf as they went on secure qualification to last year’s Central American and Caribbean Games in Dominican Republic.

Mallory Towlson was the hero for Bermuda when she scored the only goal of the match and the 26-year-old forward and Georgia Harris, the scorer of two goals in that qualifier, are part of Bermuda’s side now as they seek qualification for the 2027 Pan Am Games in Peru.

So far results have not gone in Bermuda’s favour with a 2-0 loss against Paraguay followed by a 5-0 defeat to Mexico, the tournament favourites, and they desperately need a win in at least one of their remaining two matches to entertain any hopes of playing in the play-offs on Saturday.

Guyana, on the other hand, have had a great start to the five-team tournament, with a final-quarter goal by Makaylah Poole giving them a 1-0 victory over Brazil in the competition’s opening match, a win they followed up with a 0-0 stalemate against Paraguay the next day.

Not much separates the two side on the International Hockey Federation rankings, with the Guyanese 68th and the Bermudians two places lower.

Moodley has managed to keep an eye on the Caribbean side’s opening two matches to see which areas they can exploit.

“Guyana performed really well to get that victory against Brazil,’’ the Bermuda coach said. “The draw against Paraguay was a little bit different, compared to the first match that they played.

“For us it gives us an opportunity to review some footage of their matches, and try to figure out where their holes are.

“I think that will be a competitive game. We played against them in 2022 and we were able to win, so obviously, there’s a bit of expectation for us that we have a bit of confidence going into it.

“We’ll have to see how our players are like, and recover as effectively as possible to make sure that we’re fit and ready for that match.”
