Warwick Academy in hockey clean sweep
Warwick Academy achieved a clean sweep in the Bermuda Schools Sports Federation/Bermuda Hockey Federation middle schools field hockey tournament by winning both the girls and boys tournaments at the National Sports Centre.
Warwick won on penalties in both the girls and boys divisions. They defeated Mount Saint Agnes Academy in the girls final, while the boys were victorious over Somersfield Academy.
MSA, Francis Patton, Somersfield and Warwick participated in the middle schools competitive tournament.
More than 500 students drawn from the island’s public and private schools took part in the initiative by the BSSF and BHF.
The tournament featured fast-paced six-a-side games, which allowed the island's up-and-coming field hockey players to showcase their talent.
Courtesy of the BHF, every participating school received field hockey sticks, ensuring that the sport is introduced and taught in physical education classes across the island. This effort is part of a larger push to grow field hockey at the grassroots level, giving students the opportunity to learn and fall in love with the game.
The primary school tournaments featured round-robin games and a stick work competition, with the winners taking home their own sticks and a free membership for a term to the BHF programmes.
National women’s team player Liz Stewart was pleased with the level of commitment displayed by the budding stars.
“It’s incredible to see so many young players giving it their all on the field,” Stewart said.
“Volunteering as an umpire has been a rewarding experience. Watching these students grow in their skills and passion for the sport makes me proud to be part of the field hockey community in Bermuda.”
While the primary and middle school tournaments have wrapped up with impressive performances from all teams, the excitement continues to build for the senior school tournament, scheduled for January.
