Government is reaching for the stars to bring new investment to the Island.Minister of Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy Walter Roban met with executives from some of the world’s biggest satellite communications operators at an industry conference in Paris this week.He said he outlined to companies such as SES, Iridium, International Launch Services, plus industry organisations and investors: “a concept for making Bermuda a one-stop-shop for landing and managing satellite traffic, reinsuring launches, and providing a base for tax-efficient operations”.“The reactions to what we can offer this industry are very positive,” Minister Roban said in a statement at the end of the three-day round of meetings at the World Satellite Conference. “We now have the task of making what we know this market needs into an offering they will take up. I will be moving this as quickly as possible.”More than 200 commercial communication satellites reportedly will be launched by 2020 to meet demand from a surging number of TV stations. And, according to Bloomberg, CEOs at the Paris conference are looking at how they can draw on emerging markets and new services to safeguard their profit margins and boost stock prices.Mr Roban said his meetings will result in a “consolidated proposition” to the $168 billion industry that will be used over the coming months to attract additional jobs and investment to the Island.“I am determined to build on the comparative advantage we have built for ourselves over the years,” Mr. Roban said.“We have the know-how, the enterprise culture, the infrastructure, the regulatory framework, and the orbital real-estate. It’s not hard to see why we should pursue this.”The Bermuda delegation’s presence at the annual event was preceded by a one-day round of meetings in London at which they briefed the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on the space project and enlisted them in the effort to direct UK space business to the island.Minister Roban also met with senior members of the UK telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, in an effort to forge a relationship that will enable Bermuda to act quickly in matters of international regulation where Ofcom’s participation is required. The Minister and Dr Binns return to Bermuda today, and are expected to brief Cabinet colleagues regarding the World Satellite Business Conference over the coming week.
