Premier meets with European wind-energy trade group
David Burt, the Premier, met with a representative of a wind-energy trade group while in Brussels, according to a social-media post.
Philip Cole, director of industrial affairs at WindEurope, said that he met with Mr Burt in an undated message on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“It was a pleasure to meet with Premier David Burt MP of Bermuda this evening to discuss their renewable energy plans, the increased need for energy security and our shared taste for colourful ties,” he wrote.
“Bermuda wants to have at least 85 per cent of its power generated from renewable sources by 2035, with 100 per cent of its public bus fleet electrified by 2030.
“Europe’s wind industry stands ready to support Bermuda’s renewable energy goals.”
The Regulatory Authority has said that wind will provide most of that renewable goal, mainly through a 60-megawatt offshore wind farm planned for 2030.
Stakeholder engagement is currently being undertaken, and seabed and wind speed assessments are planned for next year.
Three potential locations have been identified: five kilometres north-northeast of St George’s Island, 12 kilometres west-southwest of Somerset and 25 kilometres southwest of Bermuda.
The project is estimated to cost $250 million to $350 million and would supply about one-third of the island’s energy needs, producing electricity at 17 cents per kilowatt-hour to 32 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Brussels-based WindEurope has over 500 members, including wind turbine manufacturers, component suppliers, power utilities, wind farm developers, financial institutions, research institutes and national wind energy associations.
Members include GE Renewable Energy, Hitachi Energy and Shell.
The Premier is scheduled to return to the island today after meetings in London, Brussels and Paris.
