Roban to speak at Prince Edward Island summit
Walter Roban, the Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs, is one of the speakers at the Global Sustainable Islands Summit 2024 on Prince Edward Island, in eastern Canada, this May.
Co-hosted by the PEI provincial government, the summit is gathering “professionals, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss and explore innovative solutions and advancements in sustainable energy”.
The other co-host, the principal originator of the event, is Island Innovation Agency, the digital media, communications and marketing company promoting sustainable development and supporting United Nations Development goals.
Mr Roban was on the bill in recent years at another of the agency’s events, the free, virtually presented Island Finance Forum.
Island Innovation agency describes itself as a full-service marketing and public relations agency which offers unique insights into islands and sustainability. It highlights its mission as facilitating “sustainable development and community-led change for islands worldwide”.
The Island Innovation Services website said: “Through our services, we support the growth of organisations that develop sustainability projects or invest in island regions. Our guidance ranges from strategic advice to project coordination.
“We consistently achieve excellent results for our clients, thanks to our highly experienced team and our extensive reach in the sustainability market.”
Other small-country representation at the conference, at government and non-government level, comes from Bonaire, Turks & Caicos, Grenada, Ireland, Italy, St Martin and Denmark.
PEI is Canada’s smallest province. The Maritime province has pledged to reach net zero emissions by 2040, and “is a leading force in switching to renewable and green energy usage among islands around the globe”.
Expert speakers and panellists are expected to share insights on the current state of climate adaptation in islands around the world, including innovative, community-based approaches, and policies to foster resilience and sustainable development.
Delegates will learn of “the unique challenges and opportunities faced by islands as they navigate the financial terrain of sustainability. From green investments and eco-friendly ventures to sustainable development projects, the workshop will delve into the diverse strategies employed by islands to attract and mobilise funds for a greener future”.
One of the subjects on the agenda is island agriculture, including issues such as food security, environmental stewardship and community wellbeing.
