Workers were urged to know their employment rights as World Day for Safety and Health at Work was observed.

The Progressive Labour Party, along with trade unions, employers and the Government, marked the International Labour Organisation’s event on Friday.

Lauren Hayward-Bell, deputy party chairwoman of the PLP, said: “Here in Bermuda and across the globe, the Covid pandemic brought the importance of occupational safety and health to the forefront.

“It also heightened the awareness that, as workers, unionists, employers and the Government, we have a shared responsibility in not only ensuring safe work environments but also creating and maintaining a preventive safety and health culture in the workplace.”

She added: “In recognition of the World Day for Safety and Health and the importance of safe workplaces, the PLP encourages all stakeholders to familiarise themselves with their rights and responsibilities as outlined in Bermuda’s legislated framework and supporting regulations.”

Members of the public were invited to take part in a webinar hosted by the ILO on the topic of a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work.

April 28 has been observed as part of a global campaign to promote occupational safety, health and decent work since 2003.
