BPSU pays tribute on day that honours workers

May Day commemorates workers’ rights and those who fought to achieve them, the Bermuda Public Services Union announced for International Workers Day.

Kevin Grant, the BPSU general secretary, said the union saluted “committed and dedicated workers around the world”.

“While acknowledging the many victories achieved within the labour movement, the BPSU also reflects on the struggles many have experienced, and continue to endure, while advocating for workers’ rights.”

Mr Grant said the labour movement’s fight for essential benefits had improved the lot of all workers — citing the introduction of paid paternity leave under 2019 legislation.

“The recent prohibition of bullying and sexual harassment in the workplace and the implementation of a minimum wage also serves as a reminder of the hard-won gains of the labour movement.”

Mr Grant said the International Trade Union Confederation and Public Services International highlighted the importance of trade unions to democracy, and that “peace and democracy require public services and the workers who provide them”.

He added that consultation and open dialogue on pressing issues affecting workers remained essential.

“The rising cost of living continues to disintegrate the purchasing power of the average worker, pensions are underfunded, and the cost of health insurance is downright outrageous.

“To address these significant challenges, a collaborative tripartite effort is required.

“The BPSU is committed to the continued advocacy for a fair and just workplace for all workers.”
