Government launches Public Service career guide
A new database of Public Service jobs and their requirements has been launched to encourage young people to join the sector.
David Burt announced the launch of the Public Service Career Guide, which outlines the various jobs within the field and its qualifications, in a statement to MPs in the House of Assembly today.
The objective is to connect with qualified young Bermudians who have the potential to excel in the public sector.
The Premier said: “The Public Service is vital for our society and economy.
“It provides crucial services and programmes that improve the lives of the people of Bermuda and supports the Government’s visions and policies for a better and fairer Bermuda.
“The Public Service needs a strong and diverse talent pool that represents our community and aspirations.
“It also requires a culture of excellence, innovation and learning that helps public officers grow and succeed in their careers.”
Mr Burt, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, said that the Public Service had more than 150 vacant posts, all of which usually received few or no applications.
These posts included pilots, maritime operations controllers, public health specialists, compliance officers, engineers, accountants and auto mechanics.
The Public Service Career Guide will outline the education and training requirements needed to fulfil these posts.
It will also explain the diversity of Public Service roles and how this helps society and the economy.
The intention, the Premier said, is to help those looking for a career understand what is required in the public sector, as well as to dispel myths about the field.
The career guide is part of the reimagining careers in the Public Service campaign, a larger strategy intended to update and revitalise the public sector.
The first intended recruitment campaign will be aimed at finding trainees for future pilot and maritime controller positions. Recruitment drives for other training programmes will follow.
Existing Public Service officers will also share their experiences to get young people invested in the sector.
Mr Burt said that this method was “a powerful way to show the diverse and meaningful careers the public sector offers”.
The Public Service Career Guide is available on the government portal.
