Two teenagers are gaining hands-on experience in the work of firefighters during a four-week course that includes aspects related to safety protocols and teamwork.

Joaquin O'Connor and Dae’Jon Smith, 16-year-old honour students from The Berkeley Institute, are taking part in a youth summer programme run by the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service in collaboration with the Department of Workforce Development.

A government spokesman said: “This initiative offers an educational opportunity for young individuals keen on pursuing a career in the BFRS, including roles in firefighting and emergency response.”

He added that the young men would “gain invaluable hands-on experience in safety protocols, rescue techniques, fire prevention and teamwork”.

The spokesman explained: “Under the guidance of seasoned firefighters and staff across various departments, these young men will acquire essential skills and develop a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to community service.

“After a thorough interview process with the Department of Workforce Development, the youngsters chose the BFRS as their first career preference.”

The placements began on July 1 and will continue until July 26.

Chief Fire Officer Dana Lovell said: “We are delighted to welcome Joaquin and Dae’Jon to the BFRS family.

“This initiative is designed to inspire and equip the next generation of firefighters with the skills and values necessary for this noble profession.

“We look forward to seeing these young men grow and contribute to the safety and wellbeing of our community.”
