Government accountant celebrates 50 years of service
A government accountant who dedicated her life to advancing her career was recognised for 50 years of service.
Marilyn Cameron, a salaries supervisor, was honoured for her many years of leadership and commitment at the Accountant General department.
A spokeswoman for the Cabinet Office said: “The Government of Bermuda is delighted to take this opportunity to thank Marilyn for her many decades of dedicated service not just to the public service, but to the people of Bermuda.
“She is a true example of public service commitment and excellence.”
Ms Cameron started her career on August 29, 1974, as a temporary clerk in the accountancy department.
After being brought on permanently the following year, she saw the need to stand out among her peers and advanced into a selection of leadership roles mostly held by non-Bermudians.
Ms Cameron took evening classes at Bermuda College and gained skills that soon saw her promoted to senior payments clerk and, later, salaries supervisor.
In this role, she juggled responsibilities such as payroll, Government Employee Health Insurance and pension.
Ms Cameron was lauded for her skills in understanding collective bargaining agreements and legislative frameworks.
She also served as the department’s shop steward and was a member of the Women’s Committee and the Bermuda Public Services Union’s negotiation team.
Ms Cameron said that she had no regrets about her career choice.
A spokeswoman for the Cabinet Office said: “Ms Cameron’s 50 years of service are not just a personal achievement, but a legacy to inspire future generations of public officers to approach their roles with the same dedication, passion and integrity.“
