Gabrielle Cann has been appointed the island’s first Director of Labour, the Government announced this afternoon.

In a statement, a government spokesman said: “As the Director of Labour, Ms Cann will work under the direction of the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Economy and Labour.

“Ms Cann has worked in a variety of capacities in labour relations for over ten years.

“In her capacity as director, Ms Cann is responsible for providing guidance and direction to a team of labour relations officers and inspectors.

“She is also responsible for overseeing the certification and decertification of unions in the workplace, managing labour disputes in both unionised and non-unionised environments, and providing dispute resolution and prevention oversight.

“She is also responsible for advising the Minister of Economy and Labour on related policy matters.”

Ms Cann earned a postgraduate diploma in legal practice from the College of Law, a Bachelor of Law from Coventry University, and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Psychology from the University of the West Indies.

The position of Director of Labour was several new posts that came out of the creation of the Department of Labour, formerly the Labour Relations Sector, which was approved by Cabinet last March.
