Government issues warning about immigration agencies
The Government is receiving some immigration applications weeks or months late and without proof of payment, the Ministry of Economy and Labour said.
A spokesman urged employers and the public to be cautious when working with immigration agencies, some of which blame the Department of Immigration for the delayed submissions.
The spokesman added: “Agency negligence can expose employers and employees to significant risks, including civil penalties.
“Employers and employees found to be non-compliant — for instance, working without a valid work permit or without the minister’s permission — may each face fines of up to $5,000.”
Employers must pay late fees for any work permit application that is submitted less than one month before an active one expires, and should be familiar with the department’s work permit policies.
Employers can contact the Chief Immigration Officer at dwming@gov.bm or 444-1048, or the Assistant Chief Immigration Officer at magrimes@gov.bm or 246-8048 for guidance.
Members of the public should report unethical practices by immigration agencies to the Department of Consumer Affairs at consumers@gov.bm or 207-7627; an enforcement inspector will handle the complaint.
