Quibbling with Fahy
April 6, 2011Dear Sir,Michael Fahy did Bermuda a great service when he clearly set out in The Royal Gazette of April 5th, 20 questions Bermudians should be asking themselves about our dreadful financial state. Everyone should post this article on the kitchen fridge and get an honest answer from themselves. I doubt if many will do this, in fact they will probably blame Mr Fahy for drawing it to their attention. I would like to make two quibbles about his article:1. Government debt is greatly in excess of the budgeted figure when pension and health costs are taken into consideration. Government debt is around $5,000 million – five times what the Minister of Finance says it is. In simple terms, $100,000 for every Bermudian – man, woman and child.2. In comparing Bermuda to large economies such as US or UK, we are comparing apples and oranges. We are a one crop economy (tourism is dead) and in size we would not even rate as a small town in US. We have nil diversification and we are extremely vulnerable to forces over which we have no influence, let alone control. In financial terms, we are not a country but a speck on a flea on an elephant.ROBERT STEWARTSmith’s
