A political anachronism
March 27, 2011Dear Sir,I would be thankful if you allow me to air the following views in your Letters to the Editor column. It was worth a laugh to hear the business owners of the Corporation of Hamilton complaining about the loss of their votes in City elections. This obsolete organisation surely lacks any hint of shame. It is unfortunate that very often in Bermuda issues are determined not so much by substance but by the personalities of the persons involved. Dr Brown had a great idea during his tenure when he decided to take a good look at this organisation with a view to making it accountable. That the previous government had been awarding funds to this prehistoric creature of an era Bermuda should want to forget is beyond anyone’s imagination. Nevertheless, in essence, the issue turned on Dr Brown and the PLP rather than the presence of the Corporation of Hamilton in a modern Bermuda. My issue with Corporation of Hamilton is this: approximately two years ago, it increased the fees for parking vouchers from around $10 to $17.50. Anyone with a basic understanding of maths and Bermuda would readily tell you that this percentage increase was exorbitant in the circumstances. Parking at Bulls Head went from $4 to $5 at that time. Unfortunately, the rulers at the Corporation know only too well no Bermudian would complain. And so it came to pass.Within the last month or so parking fees went from $5 to $7 per day. This increase amounts to $10 per week which is $40 per month. Here is my problem, my wife and I have a car and we have one child. We live in the East End but I work in the West End of the island at some odd hours. Out of deference to my young child I use a bike to get to and from work everyday regardless of the weather. My wife is employed in a clerical/administrative position with a company located in the City of Hamilton and solely because of her contribution to her job was one of the few people to get a raise at her firm at the beginning of January. I have not had an increase in wages for two years.Because of location of my wife’s job we have had to make a decision to select day care for our young child in Hamilton. As a result of the recent increase in parking fees, our total salaries have decreased by $20 net. In other words we are $20 in deficit, thanks to the Corporation of Hamilton. To put it another way, the entire salary increase my wife got this year will have to go to the Corporation of Hamilton in order for my wife to park in Bulls Head. Now we or at least many of us will have taxes coming at us from two sources. One, a Government the public can vote for the other, an anachronism from a long bygone era which receives votes from its old boys network. I am the victim of the taxes of two governments. That is why listening to the business owners complain about the loss of their precious over weighted votes brings a chuckle.Remove Dr Brown from the picture and you’ll see why the issue that came up during his tenure was a valid one. After all, one of the main critics of the workings of the Corporation of Hamilton was a former editor of The Royal Gazette, who is/was no left wing lunatic. The PLP government did not do itself any favors by paying for a study; that was a total waste of time and money. This issue did not call for any study.I can guarantee that the next increase for parking in Bulls Head car park will be a minimum of $3 making it $10 per day. The Corporation will continue to raise its fees until it reaches those charged for prime parking in Manhattan. We will continue to pay and seemingly, keep our collective mouths shut.I know the Corporation will be stoutly defended by its clique with all kinds of rationales. I beg to ask two questions for starters; firstly, just tell me where my wife (with our young child) can park in Hamilton that is cheaper and secondly, who are the competitors of the Corporation of Hamilton.TWO TIME VICTIMSt George’s
