Waiting for new party

April 22, 2011Dear Sir,I am sure I am not alone in waiting anxiously for the two opposition parties to iron out their differences, if any, and unite to create a solid alternative to the ailing PLP. A new name for a new party is essential, and it is time the members put aside their personal agendas and worked together for what is best for the country. If we don’t get on with it soon we will be doomed to another session of the PLP.There are many things that need to be changed, for example this nonsense about the 21-day time limit for tourists. We should be welcoming tourists with open arms for up to three months at least, and encouraging families to come for the summer, and retirees from cold countries like Canada to spend the winter months here. A little clever advertising would help.I was shocked to read that we had been nosing about on cruise ships and fining passengers for having small amounts of marijuana in their luggage. This could be legal in their home state, and the sooner we follow their example and make it legal here for small quantities for personal use the better. It would certainly stop a lot of the gang warfare and killings, all of which seem to be fuelled by the drug industry. As for the problems we are having with public transport, we must not allow the unions to ruin our budding tourism, as they did so drastically some years ago. Government must take a stand and if bus drivers are so sickly they should not be driving buses at all. Let them go and employ some of the many bright intelligent men and women who are now unemployed, and would flock to fill positions as bus drivers. The situation last week at Dockyard and Horseshoe Bay was disastrous, and surely ferries and buses are our main priority now that the cruise ships are coming in on a regular basis. Government collects a fee for every passenger who comes ashore in Bermuda. That money should go towards the comfort and well-being of the tourist, and this means regular bus and ferry services.I could go on and on but enough is enough, and I just hope that the UBP and the BDA can come up with something like the NBPP, New Bermuda People’s Party, or whatever. The sooner the better.E RABENPaget
