Pride goeth before a fall
May 4, 2011Dear Sir,“Fuming tourists brand transport system a joke”, May 3, Royal Gazette. All right thinking persons reading this article would have felt gutted by the ill treatment of our much needed visitors. Taxpayers have already been punished with the $60 million bill for a concrete jetty known to many as ‘The Correia Peninsula’.Now we see this over investment bearing no fruit as long as the Government shows its lack of interest in the details of how to manage yet another aspect of the Island’s once primary business. It would appear some of those employed in the transport business at Dockyard have been taught little in the way of patience, manners, diplomacy or restraint. Their treatment of our guests leaves everything to be desired. Where are the representatives from our over funded Department of Tourism? This is another example that begs the transition to private sector management. It is beyond comprehension that this situation should exist while people are out of work and the country is a thousand million dollars in the hole. If this affair does not exacerbate the dull mood and depression felt by so many living here who work to keep Bermuda Inc. open for business, then the next snafu will. The loss of ferry service and bus service seems to go hand in hand with cuts to the Police Service. All important, all crucial to the ability of our society to function, yet the Government can’t find the money for such high priority services. What do the Government regard as a priority? Doing more with less equates to more damage with less effort or is it more pay with less results? The unfortunate irony of this debacle and public relations disaster is that those who will actually pay for it are the taxpayers, once again.Let me remind those taxpayers that they are also voters and may use that secret ballot to choose patriots and persons committed to the well-being of all people living, working and visiting here. Those who come to visit are our esteemed guests, expressing their vote of confidence by spending hard earned dollars on us instead of a thousand other destinations. To those of you who treat them so rudely, you have embarrassed us all and so shame on you. Will you really only learn the simple act of treating them as you yourself would like to be treated, when your pockets are empty? To the Government, your complete lack of damage control and forward planning is crippling us all.
