Honouring our heroes
May 15, 2011Dear Sir,We all may have a different opinion of the late Kent Simmons due to our personal relationships with him. But not everyone knew Kent the way I remember him. Nor had all known Kent for as long as I'd known him.Without me turning over too many stones, or, as the old-timers would say, opening a can of worms, I would just say this. Kent and I were more than just friends. Though not biologically related we were “soul brothers”. I'd met Kent and LeLa in school when we attended the former Bermuda Technical Institute way back in 1967 (if I'm not mistaken.) Kent was always ever so friendly to people of all walks of life. That was Kent. If I had to describe him using only one word, my word of choice would be “charismatic”. Kent was gifted with having the ability of luring others with his charm, his enthusiasm and devotion. Kent was always different and will always be remembered as different, starting with his Welsh accent!Vividly I recall taking Kent home after school many a days, towing him on the crossbar of my pedal bike up to Govt Gate before continuing to make my way home. If time permitted, I can go on and on for hours sharing numerous escapades.Sensei Kent Simmons. I was and will always remain proud in having known you. Also, just like everyone else here today, I too will be missing you, Kent, whether it be individually or collectively. Kent you've left us all wonderful memories. May God be with you, my brother.RAYMOND RAYSt George's
