No time for Independence
Dear Sir,While I am not totally opposed to the idea of an Independent Bermuda, I am totally against it under our current conditions and government. How can Mr Bean and Mr Lister think we'd be able to quash racial tensions by being Independent? I really cannot see their reasoning. The country is so racially tense today because of Dr Brown and his close counterparts in the PLP who played on the emotions of race for political gain. How can they expect the child (Bermuda) to act right when the mother (Britain) is not right there for help? As is the case with most children, they will only act worse when mommy turns her back.I certainly wouldn't trust this Government under an Independent Bermuda. They have continually shown no fiscal responsibility, no accountability for actions and crime and unemployment are rising ever more.Bermudians, now is not the time to worry about Independence, just like a 14-year-old shouldn't move out of a household. They do not have the maturity or responsibility to lead yet. This Government cannot even come to grips and tackle the issues now. What chance do we Bermudians stand with Britain having no authority over them? They have resources available to them … such as have British agencies investigate police and political corruption which is one obvious reason drugs continue to come into this Country and fuels the violence here. Will they do that though? Doubtful as they wouldn't want to have any further blame proven on officials under their tenure as Government. Stop trying to break free until you dust yourself off and clean up this Island you so woefully have hurt before trying to break off from the UK.ROBERT DAVIESDevonshire
