Offended by Senator

June 12, 2011Dear Sir,On Thursday June 9, 2011, I had the unfortunate displeasure of viewing the portion of the ZBM news where Senator LaVerne Furbert expressed her opinion on the song “Proud to be Bermudian”. Her statements included that the song was “offensive”, and was indicative of Bermuda not progressing in a positive direction under the power of the PLP. I feel if that if the latter was truly the case, this song should have been produced years ago. That song was written right on time, when people like myself were losing faith in the future of Bermuda. However, Sen Furbert has taken the lyrics of the song and twisted them to make the song “offensive” to her and the PLP. Even if there were underlying political reasons why the song was produced, there is nothing political about that song itself, as I have listened to the lyrics over and over.I understand that different people interpret information differently, however, the statements made by Sen Furbert exhibits the inability to interpret the lyrics outside of her scope of profession. As a non-political, young citizen of this beautiful island, I am able to interpret the song for what it truly is; an ode to the place we call home in spite of the negative occurances. This brings me to my next point. Is Sen Furbert aware that the proceeds are donated to the public education system for the first year of the album sales? If we're getting all “political” here, I would say that Sen Furbert has no regard for the progression of Bermuda's youth, nor her party. Having been through the public school system for 13 years and now as a university student, I can truthfully say that improvements are necessary for the betterment of this island of ours.PROUD & BLESSED TO BE BERMUDIANNew York City
