Don’t cut education

August 17, 2011Dear Sir,It is a huge mistake by the Progressive Labour Party Government to cut the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health’s budgets. When you cut education to the extent that teachers, teacher specialist, paraprofessionals, and educational support staff such as is about to happen at Berkeley Institute, you are sending a long-term body blow to the country which may take a decade or longer from which to recover. The effect on health is obvious. The prison officers’ dispute, the dock workers and cuts in education are all a result of the terrible economic legacy left by the previous Premier Dr. Ewart Brown and the negative effects on our economy brought about by regressive economic policies such as (term limits, land licences, and unnecessary consultant fees). When will the PLP government learn that term limits and land licenses are having a continuous negative effect on our economic infrastructure with serious long term effects on our country? It should be obvious to all those suffering directly by cuts in the budget and those who have lost their jobs that something is terribly wrong with our economy beyond the general recession that is taking place. When will the government have the courage to change those policies and help start the climb out of an economical abyss. It matters not which political party you support. It is our people who are suffering. Many families are hard pressed to feed their families properly. Children are having to do without basics, like breakfast. And now potentially, their education is being seriously threatened. Do not cut the education budget Mr. Government it will do damage to the country in the long term, and many children immediately. Seek cuts in other ways to effect savings, but leave education alone.QUINTON L EDNESS CBEWarwick
