Better TV service, please
Better TV service, pleaseOctober 9, 2011Dear Sir,I am getting tired of turning on my TV and not being able to get a station on CableVision. This is the second Sunday in a row that I have not been able to get PBS on Channel 5. I was disappointed when suddenly the New York PBS was switched to a Florida PBS, the fourth PBS station after first having one in Detroit and then one in Denver.I enjoyed the New York station because of the art content. The Ovation channel which featured art programmes was suddenly stopped months ago. There are four ESPN stations but the programming rarely matches the TV guide which makes it impossible to record events. There are plenty of English soccer games on Saturdays but you never know where they will come on. The same thing happens with European Champions League games, NFL, golf, tennis, basketball etc.On Channel 137 the schedule for Zee Sports still appears and the channel has not been on for months. I get excited when it looks like a cricket match may be on and then I remember that the channel now has programmes that I can’t understand. These problems do not match the criteria that the Telecommunications Commission is making a decision on in the next week but not having shows match the schedule and channels being off the air on a regular basis is a very serious problem for paying customers.OTTO TROTTHamilton ParishKeep local TV on cableOctober 9, 2011Dear Sir,I sent the attached letter to the Telecommunications Enquiry into Cablevision’s decision not to carry Channels 7 and 9 due to a dispute with Bermuda Broadcasting Company over transmitting fees.I hope that you will publish it, as I am sure I’m not the only person who stands to be impacted. Not only would I lose the local programming, but also all of the network affiliates carried by Bermuda Broadcasting Company (ABC, CBS, etc), which represents a significant portion of my viewing time.October 3, 2011Dear Sir,Re: Public Enquiry CablevisionI have subscribed to Bermuda CableVision for many years. The primary reason is because my house is surrounded by higher hills that make it virtually impossible to receive television signals over the air by means of an aerial or a dish. That being the case, my sole concern is that Bermuda CableVision continue to carry the local and international networks offered by the Bermuda Broadcasting Company, as I have no other means of receiving those channels without CableVision.I fully understand that, if CableVision continues to carry Channels 7 and 9, they will be obliged to pay a fee to Bermuda Broadcasting Company, and in so doing, CableVision will pass the additional cost on to their subscribers.CableVision subscribers should be the ones to make the choice whether or not the company will continue to carry Channels 7 and 9. In other words, CableVision should pay the additional cost to the BBC, and let their subscribers decide if they wish to pay an increased fee. I feel strongly that CableVision should not be permitted to arbitrarily decide what I can and cannot watch on TV, which would be the case if they decide against carrying Channels 7 and 9 in the future. Therefore I appeal to the Commission to consider the consequences for many CableVision subscribers who, because of the location of their homes, stand to lose their viewing options if Channels 7 and 9 are no longer carried via cable. It would be akin to censorship and/or discrimination.Respectfully yours,CAROLINE L WILLSSt. David’s
