Facts about drugs

October 12, 2011Dear Sir,In light of the fairly recent talk about bringing in cheaper prescription pharmaceuticals from India, I respectfully submit the following BBC article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15208595A few salient points from the article:1 “Counterfeit drugs are a $200b (£128b) industry worldwide …”2 “The majority of fake drugs available are said to originate in India and China.” Deputy drug controller general of India, Dr D Roy3 “ … it’s nearly impossible to find any differences in them..” (between the real drug and the counterfeit). Deputy drug controller general of India, Dr D Roy4. “Deputy drug controller general of India, Dr D Roy, says counterfeit medicines often resemble the originals in chemical composition. But he thinks the biggest problem is the packaging. Retailers too would find it difficult to identify a fake. (my italics)..” “ The packaging industry is not regulated by us.”How will our esteemed Minister of Health, construction boss Zane DeSilva, who is of course very knowledgeable and trained in things medical, ensure that the Bermuda community would not be put at risk from importing drugs from India?BRUCE McMARTINWarwick
